I’ve been reading about the benefits of learning by example. I really like a bunch of ideas from ‘A Thomas Jefferson Education’ such as ‘inspire, don’t require.’ Because of this, I’ve begun to set an example and set up daily ‘practice times’ where I set the timer and practice things that I want to improve in or inspire my kids in. I do tap dancing. (my girls were having so much fun dancing that I decided to take a class and I love it!) I also practice piano. I took lessons for 7 years as a kid, but never practiced and could only claim one song for all that time and money! Since I have a daughter who’s showing musical interest, I decided I’d just practice for 15 minutes a day and show how much I enjoy it. Some days I practice drawing as well because one son is showing an interest in art. Guess what? I’m starting to improve in all these areas and I’m looking forward to it every day! My kids are practicing things such as drawing, dancing, Spanish, etc. They are allowed to practice whatever they want to improve in. Inspire, don’t require. I love it! I’m not all the way there though-sometimes I do require! As my kids see me working on my business though, they plan their own businesses.
